Houseplants are one of our favorite things to carry at the greenhouse. In all of the years that we were at our old location, and our first year at our new location, we never carried houseplants. We had never seen a high demand for them, and we had nowhere to display them. When we opened our new location in 2018, we had tons of customers asking for houseplants, so we thought we might give it a try. But what we didn't know was that we'd end up loving houseplants more than we had ever thought possible!
One of the main reasons that we love house plants is because of how easy they are to take care of, and how great they look year round! Houseplants really only need to be watered once every 4-7 days, depending on the type of plant. There is a type of indoor plant for every spot in your home, and they add so much character. From small, desktop plants like cacti, and 'Janet Craig' plants, to large hanging philodendron and pothos that can grow 8-10 feet long after just one short year, different house plants can achieve many different effects. But the visual appeal isn't the only reason we love them.
Indoor plants are also great for your health. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. In doing so, they eliminate harmful air toxins. A NASA research project showed that in just 24 hours, houseplants can remove up to 87% of air toxins! Plants in your workplace can also regulate humidity and increase positivity, productivity, and concentration by up to 15%. It is scientifically proven that greenery and nature help us stay calm and feel more relaxed, which will benefit your everyday state of mind.
We have created a list below of some of our favorite houseplants, and where they can be used to best complement your space:
SNAKE PLANT: These tall, variegated, pointy plants look great as a desktop plant when they are small enough. As they grow larger, they look great in nooks next to sofas and other furniture. We have one next to our lounge set in the cafe!
JANET CRAIG PLANT: Showy, emerald green spiky plants look great as a centerpiece on coffee table, or in a cute decorative pot on a desk or nightstand.
HEARTLEAF PHILODENDRON: These large, deep green, heart-shaped leaves are almost always grown in a hanging basket, as they trail and grow quickly. They look great hanging in an antique hanger, and trailing off of an antique hutch.
POTHOS: Pothos carry all of the traits of a philodendron, but their leaves are glossier, and more vibrant. They are also available in a smaller, more upright form.
RUBBER FIG: Available in a dark bronze, or a peach and green variegated leaf, these glossy, rounded leaves are a great statement piece in living rooms, dining rooms, and kitchens!
